Day 12 - From Fairholme Campground to Beaver, WA

This morning while eating breakfast, I was observing the ravens that live around the campsite. I found that they were amazingly camera shy.  They would hang around in one place for long periods of time, but as soon as I pointed the camera they were on the move.  I spent half an hour or more attempting to get a picture, and just continually failed.  Finally I gave up - they won.

Again, packing up and getting out of the campground was a slow process, and it was probably 2PM by the time I started pedaling.  Today was entirely on US 101.  Coming out of the campground, it was uphill for the first couple of miles.  I'm finally getting some hill climbing legs.  I still end up out of breath by the side of the road, but now it's usually for less than a minute.

Once I got up that first hill, it was pretty flat, so the riding was fairly easy.  Since we started so late, and campgrounds can be few and far between, we decided that we should probably stop in Beaver, where there was at least an RV park, where we'd be able to wash clothes and get showers in.

After a short day of riding, we reached the park, where I set up a sun shade while Sharon went to the "store" nearby to see what, if anything she could get to make for dinner.  She returned with a bag of "sweet maui onion rings" which contained no onions, and a bag of potato chips, and declared that these were the closest things to food that were available at the store.  Because of this, we were going to have to go straight into our food reserves, which meant eating pasta with homemade sauce and a salad.  Sharon named the salad "bear salad" because in addition to mixed greens, it had berries and smoked salmon.  It was all very yummy.

The guys at the park were an interesting crew, and we met a very friendly, if undertrained, pitbull.  Apparently the pitbull's owner was very concerned when he decided that he wanted to PLAY with little Bird.  Sharon reported that Bird basically pirouetted over him and basically stayed completely out of reach.  I think that he (the dog) was not expecting her agility and speed.
